Doreen's Story
Hello to my fellow & gal classmates from KTHS.
Since those many years ago -- about the time of the 1950 flood -- I took a job with the Great West Life Ins. Co. for what originally was to have been summer only employment. It lasted longer than that; but when I became engaged to be married that was the end of my employment there. Their policy at that time was not to have married women on staff.
From the GWL, I worked part-time at Carnegie Finance & Investment Co. Ltd. before I wed my best friend John L. McDonald in 1954. It wasn't until after his death that I even learnt how to drive a car!! which I then found to be a necessity. We raised 4 children together & currently have 8 grandchildren. It was about that time that a new gentleman came into my life. We lived together for about 27 years until his death from MRSA (infection) in 2010.
Over the years I have done some travelling -- to Mazatlan, Britain, Victoria, Los Vegas, Ottawa, Sarnia, Brantford to name just a few. I am a founding member of the St. James Assiniboia Senior Centre (now the 55+ centre) and for a number of years did art painting with the St. James Art Club. Over the year my eye-sight had deteriorated until my driving licence was cancelled. That's when I investigated eye surgery. Had cataracts removed from first my left eye, then my right eye before once again being allowed to regain my driving licence.
So, here I am today looking forward to renewing acquaintances with you, my former classmates.
